Lightning kills 27 in eastern India

Authorities say 27 people were killed after lightning struck in various parts of the Indian state of West Bengal.

Pre-monsoon storms hit six districts of the state on Monday evening, accompanied by strong winds.

While most of the casualties were directly affected by the strikes, some deaths were also reported after the thatched and tree huts collapsed, disaster management official Mrinal Kanti Rano said.

The victims were mostly farmers, although some were people who were just outside, he added.

In the worst of these incidents, lightning struck six people sitting near a pumping station in Murshidabad district, Rano said.

“We have such storms before the monsoon, but the high death toll this time around is unusual.

Usually (we) have two to five deaths in such incidents, but this time it’s several times higher, ”said Rano.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the loss of life.

He announced compensation of 200,000 rupees ($ 2,746) for the relatives of the deceased and 50,000 rupees for each injured.

In a related incident, a domestic flight was hit by turbulence just before landing in the state capital, Kolkata, injuring eight passengers.

Summer storms accompanied by strong winds are common in India before the rainy monsoon.

The meteorological office has forecast more storms for India in the coming days. (dpa / NAN)
