Lebanon army says more ammonium nitrate found near Beirut port

The Lebanese army said on Thursday they found more than 4 tonnes of highly explosive ammonium nitrate near the entrance of the Beirut port, where a huge explosion ripped through the facility in August.

The army disclosed this to the state-run National News Agency (NNA) in Beirut.

The agency, citing an army statement, said that upon the request of the Beirut port customs department, army engineers inspected four containers near the port entrance number 9.

““It was found that they contain an amount of ammonium nitrate, weighing about 4 tons and 350 kg,” it said.

It added that units from the army engineering team “were dealing with it,” without giving further details.

On Aug. 4, Beirut was shaken by a massive explosion of ammonium nitrate which was poorly stored in a port warehouse.

It killed 190 people and left at least 6,000 injured.

United States Embassy in Afghanistan warns of extremists’ Attacks on women

Published

The United States Embassy in Afghanistan has issued a security alert for its citizens, warning about an increased risk of attacks on women by the extremist organisations.

“The United States Embassy in Kabul warns United States citizens that extremist organisations continue to plan attacks against a variety of targets in Afghanistan, including a heightened risk of attacks targeting female government and civilian workers.

“Others including teachers, human rights activists, office workers, and government employees,” the diplomatic mission said in a statement.

At the same time, it did not specify which organisations could carry out the attacks.

The intra-Afghan peace talks started in Doha on Saturday after the Afghan government and the Taliban movement successfully completed a long-awaited prisoner exchange arrangement.

The talks are now expected to pave the way for a peace process and withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan after almost two decades of war and insurgency.

United States judge blocks Trump’s postal rules that could disrupt election

Published

A United States federal judge in a new ruling halted the Trump administration from implementing new postal rules that could disrupt the mail system ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

Chief Judge Stanley Bastian from the Eastern District of the State of Washington said this in Washington.

“The states have demonstrated that the defendants are involved in a politically motivated attack on the efficiency of the Postal Service.

“They have also demonstrated that this attack on the Postal Service is likely to irreparably harm the states’ ability to administer the 2020 general election,” Bastian said as quoted by The Washington Posts.

The judge granted a request from 14 states to temporarily block operational changes that have been blamed for a slowdown in mail delivery, the report added.

Trump’s postmaster general, Louis DeJoy, has come under fire for pushing changes that would slow down mail delivery in a year that is expected to see a record-level of mailed ballots.

United States democratic senators unveil $350bn funding package to counter China’s rise

Published

Nearly a dozen United States Senate Democrats have sponsored new legislation to fund efforts to counter China’s edge in areas such as manufacturing, technology and science.

“The proposal includes over 350 billion dollars in new funding to synchronise and mobilise all aspects of United States national power,” a release from Sen. Sherrod Brown’s office revealed.

“Sponsored by 11 leading Democrats, the legislation is guided by four pillars: (1) invest in American competitiveness; (2) support American alliances and partners; (3) restore and advance a values-centered foreign policy; and (4) ensure China pays a price for its predatory actions.”

The so-called “America Leads Act,” according to the statement, is needed as a “course correction, after almost four years of destruction under President (Donald) Trump.”

The package aims to make comprehensive investments in United States workers, alliances, and diplomacy “to confront the rise of china.”

The proposal also seeks to “reaffirm America’s strong security commitment in the Indo-Pacific and a forward-deployed posture in the region to ensure that all nations can exercise their rights in the region’s international waters.”

In addition, the senators hope to strengthen trade enforcement across a wide range of areas including intellectual property, supply chains, currency manipulation, and counterfeit goods, the release said.

Measles kills at least 36 children in Philippines this year

Published

The Philippines’ Department of Health said on Thursday that at least 36 children under 5 years old died from measles in the Philippines in 2020.

The health department, which disclosed this in a statement, said: “In 2020, pockets of measles outbreaks are being reported in the Philippines.

“As of August, there are around 3,500 reported measles cases with 36 deaths. Most of the cases are among children under 5 years old.”

In the Philippines, according to the department, an estimated 2.4 million children under the age of 5 are susceptible to measles.

It added that measles was one of the most contagious diseases in the world, and that up to nine out of 10 people exposed to the measles virus would contract the disease if not vaccinated.

The department will conduct the nationwide measles and polio supplemental immunisation campaign starting Oct. 26 this year.

The World Health Organisation and the UN Children’s Fund are supporting the campaign, the department added.

The government is targeting children under 5 years old, around 9.4 million children for the measles-rubella vaccine and 6.9 million children for the oral polio vaccine.

“In spite of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), a high-quality immunisation campaign is urgently needed to stop measles transmission and possible outbreaks,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque said.

Measles is a dangerous and fatal disease, with complications that can include severe diarrhoea and dehydration, pneumonia, ear and eye complications, encephalitis or swelling of the brain, or permanent disability.

There is no specific treatment for measles.

The only reliable protection from measles is vaccination, the department said in the statement.

“While measles is highly contagious, it is also a preventable disease.

“We must not lose the decades of progress we have achieved in immunising and protecting Filipino children, even amid the COVID-19 pandemic,” WHO Representative in the Philippines Rabindra Abeyasinghe said in the same statement.

He reiterated that the measles vaccine is safe and has been in use for 50 years.
