LASG seals 16 companies for tax evasion

By Lilian Okoro

The Lagos State Tax Service (LIRS) resumed sealing businesses and hotel businesses for unpaid consumption taxes on Monday, shutting down 16 businesses while the tax law is enforced.

LIRS Director of Legal Services Mr. Seyi Alade said during the statewide application he decided to wave the baton against defaulters who insist on cheating the state government .

Alade noted that LIRS suspended for closure of businesses and hotel businesses due to unpaid taxes

He said the companies involved missed the March 31 deadline.

“Now the service has resumed sealing businesses, especially hospitality businesses; he is committed to continuing the exercise until full compliance with the payment and remittance of taxes is achieved, ”said Alade.

He said the sealed businesses were restaurants, hotels and guest houses.

Alade has listed the companies sealed to include Café Trance, Maple Cottage, Imperial Chinese Cuisine, New World Inn, Inspiro Galaria, Grace Garden Event, Cristabol Place, Queens Park Event Center, Axor Suites, and Blue Moon Hotel.

He said the others included Citi View Hotel, Kamal’s Crib, 7th Heaven, and Infinity Platinum Bar and Restaurant.

Alade said the tax obligations of the companies concerned were covered from 2013 to 2020.

“Before LIRS embarks on sealing, it must send two letters to the management of the affected company, reminding them of the tax obligations.

“The notice of formal notice and the letter of intent to seize were sent to the management of the hotel companies, but they did not act,” he said.

Alade claimed that less than 65% of businesses operating in the state pay taxes, saying many of them operate without any tax payments to the government.

He called on businesses to ensure up-to-date tax payments.

Alade said the government is working tirelessly to provide an enabling environment for state businesses.

According to him, LIRS is deploying an aggressive approach to ensure that all taxes are collected to help the state carry out its development projects for the benefit of Lagosians and the country as a whole.

Alade said the LIRS is currently running an initiative called “IBILE” to attract more taxpayers into the tax net.

The “IBILE” strategy is an electronic platform that represents the divisions of Lagos – Ikorodu, Badagry, Ikeja, Lagos and Epe (IBILE).

Alade added that the agency profiled individuals and corporations on a daily basis to attract more people into the tax net.

“Our mission is to ensure that every taxable adult residing in Lagos State is included in the tax net,” he said.

However, some of the companies concerned made payments regarding their responsibilities during the seizure / execution and paid an additional N 250,000 for the cost of the seizure. (NAA)
