Lagos State Government Commissions Affordable Housing Estate
The Lagos State Government recently commissioned the 72-unit Ndubuisi Kanu Housing Estate located in Gbagada, along Oworonshoki Expressway, as part of its efforts to reduce the housing deficit in the state. In addition to the Gbagada estate, the government also commissioned 660 homes in Odo-Onosa/Ayandelu and 144 resettlement homes for displaced people in the Agbowa area.
The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who spoke at the unveiling of the estate, said that the aim of the government is to strengthen its efforts to reduce the housing deficit by partnering with the private sector to deliver affordable, safe, and decent housing units. He noted that providing adequate, affordable, and decent housing is a significant challenge faced by megacities all over the world, and Lagos is no exception.
Lagos faces the challenge of limited land size with a massive population, which makes it difficult to meet the demands for housing. However, the government has completed 19 housing estates in different parts of the state, including the Ndubuisi Kanu Estate, named after a former military governor of the state.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, said that the Lagos State Government has been consistently strengthening its housing agenda in the last four years. He explained that the goal is to make decent homes available and accessible to Lagosians, irrespective of their social class or income level.
According to Akinderu-Fatai, the ultimate goal is to make Lagos comparable to the 21st economy all over the world in terms of the availability of beautiful communities with adequate infrastructure where people can live. To achieve this goal, the government has completed and delivered various schemes across Lagos, including Lateef Jakande Gardens in Igando, Courtland Villas, Igbokushu, Lekki apartments, Lekki Lagos, State Affordable Public housing Scheme In Idale Badagry, Bayview Estate, Lekki, Sunnyville Apartments Nob Oluwa, Ogba, Phoenix Apartment, Ilupeju, LagosHOMS Lekki Phase 1, Babatunde Raji Fashola Estate in Iponri, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye Estate, B.O Benson Estate, Sangotedo Housing Estate, Eti-Osa among others.
Furthermore, the completion of the Ndubuisi Kanu Housing Estate provides a valuable addition to the state’s home stock, adds value to the beauty of the environment, and serves as a catalyst for improved economic activities in the area. During its construction, the project provided gainful engagement for a good number of contractors, artisans, and suppliers of building materials. These homes are subsidized so that the state can bridge the gap of housing.
The director of engineering services, Lagos Ministry of Housing, Mr. Olaniyan Rabiu, also noted that the commissioning of the estate adds to the state’s livable community and serves as a catalyst for improved economic activities in the area.
Finally, the governor charged the new home-owners to keep the estate well maintained by cooperating with the State-appointed facility manager. With this new estate and other completed projects, the Lagos State Government shows a commitment to bringing affordable homes to Lagosians who need them.
