Mr. Ibrahim made this disclosure during the 41st Meeting of the Regular National Executive Council of SSANU, NEC, hosted by Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife Branch, on Thursday.

He said the economic downturn was taking its toll on Nigerians as prices of goods skyrocketed out of control.

“The union leaders cannot sit back and allow people to witness yet another difficulty; all hands must be on deck to fight for our rights,” he said.

The president of the SSANU explained that soon the unions will decide on the expected increase in fuel prices throughout the country.

He pointed out that 40% of the agreements signed by the SSANU with the Federal Government were not fulfilled.

The President of SSANU commended the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, for maintaining a peaceful coexistence with the staff and students of the institution.

He instructed the Vice Chancellor to use a per form instead of the written examination for staff promotion, adding that there should be a reward for commitment to duty as well as a punishment for neglect of duty.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor thanked SSANU for choosing the OAU for its 41st regular meeting of the NEC.

Mr. Ogunbodede said that OAU SSANU has been playing a key role in the smooth running of university affairs and said that there are no outstanding issues to be resolved with the union.

He commended former SSANU exco past and present for their understanding and cooperation with school authorities.

“We have a problem that may cause chaos on the ground, but due to the mutual understanding between the duo, we have been able to work together amicably; the members have been very supportive,” he said.

He tasked SSANU to address the problem of the shortcomings of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS, through cooperation, saying that was the only way out to solve the problem with IPPIS.

He explained that the members of SSANU were not affected by the issue of payment of promotion arrears as academic staff and promised to ensure the promotion of union members as and when due.

The university don also urged SSANU to play a leading role in the pension plan issue to enable members to get their benefits on time after retirement.

Earlier, the president of the OAU branch of SSANU, Taiwo Arobadi, welcomed the members to the institution and congratulated them for their commitment and dedication.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja 11, represented by Sooko Kemade Elugbaju, congratulated SSANU on their NEC meeting and said their contribution to the success of the university was highly commendable.
