Kyari: police recommend suspension and initiate investigation

By Monday Ijeh

The Inspector General of Police (IG), Mr. Usman Baba, ordered the immediate suspension of Mr. Abba Kyari, Deputy Commissioner of Police, following the high-profile and fraudulent corruption allegations against the officer.

Force public relations officer Frank Mba made the revelation in a statement Sunday in Abuja.

The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that Kyari, an acclaimed super cop, known for his dexterity in detecting high-profile crimes, has been in the eye of the storm in recent days, following accusations damaging that has been blamed by the US federal government. Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

Mba said Kyari’s suspension from the Nigerian Police Service, pending the outcome of an ongoing internal investigation, was contained in a letter from the IG to the Police Service Commission.

The spokesperson said the suspension letter, dated July 31, complied with internal police force disciplinary procedures.

The IG further noted that the suspension should also create an environment conducive to a Special Investigative Panel (SIP) to carry out its mission on the weighty allegations against the officer.

“The suspension is without prejudice to the constitutional presumption of innocence in favor of the officer.”

Mba said the SIP, made up of four senior police officers, was headed by Mr. Joseph Egbunike, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force’s Criminal Investigation Department.

According to him, the SIP should undertake a detailed examination of all allegations against Kyari by the US government as contained in the relevant documents made available to the Nigerian police by the FBI.

Mba said the SIP would also obtain detailed representation from Kyari for all allegations against him, conduct further investigations as it sees fit, and submit recommendations to guide future actions by the force leadership.

Kyari, head of the Police Intelligence Response Team, has been accused of being paid by internet fraudster Ramon Abbas, known as Hushpuppi, to arrest one of his friends in connection of a $ 1.1 million scam.

Mba pledged the force’s dedication to the rule of law, assuring the public of the sanctity of the investigation as well as absolute respect for Kyari’s rights and privileges. (NAA)
