Six out of the eight political parties that signified their intention to participate in the March 14 by-election into Patigi state constituency in in Kwara have submitted their Forms EC9 and EC9E to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.
The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kwara, Malam Garba Madami, confirmed this to the Nigeria News Agency on Wednesday in Ilorin.
Madami said INEC headquarters communicated the list of the six political parties to Kwara through a letter signed by the Commission’s Secretary, Mrs Rose Anthony.
The letter, dated Feb. 20, 2020, was titled: “Forwarding of Forms EC9 and final list of candidates for Patigi State Constituency By-election scheduled for 14thday of March, 2020.”
The REC explained that by the letter from INEC headquarters, only six political parties would take part in the by-election.
He listed the six political parties and their candidates as: Shehu D. Usman (AAC), Zubairu Shaba Musa (ADC), and Ahmed Rufai Adam (APC).
Others are Mohammed Aishetu (APM), Oladipo Benjamin (NNPP) and Mohammed Salihu Yahaya (PDP).
Madami added that the commission has published the list of the candidates that would take part in the March 14 by-election in accordance with Section 31 (3) of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.
NAN recalls that eight political parties had earlier conducted their primaries to elect candidates for the by-election.
They were Action Alliance (AA), African Democratic Congress (ADC), African Action Congress (AAC), All Progressives Congress (APC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Action Peoples Party (APP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Patigi constituency in the House of Assembly became vacant following the death of the member representing the constituency, Mr Ahmed Rufai, on Dec. 3, 2019.
NAN also reports that the Clerk of Kwara House of Assembly notified INEC about the death of the member via a letter dated Jan. 27, 2020, in line with Section 116 (2) of the 1999 Constitution.

Gov. Ayade congratulates Obaseki on re-election
Gov. Ben Ayade of Cross River has congratulated his Edo counterpart, Gov. Godwin Obaseki, on his re-election.
Obaseki, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) polled 307, 955 votes to defeat his closest rival, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who scored 223,619 votes.
Ayade described Obaseki’s victory at the polls as well deserved considering his achievements in the past four years.
This is contained in a statement released by Ayade’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Christian Ita, to journalists on Sunday in Calabar.
Ayade’ said, “I extend my warm felicitations to you on your well deserved victory in the just concluded Edo gubernatorial election.
“For those of us who have keenly followed your giant strides in Edo, your victory did not come as a surprise.
“Your re-election, therefore, represents a bold and emphatic testimony to the good works you had done in the past four years.”
He, however, urged Obaseki to see his victory as a clarion call to do more for Edo people who had reposed their confidence in him in the last four years.
The governor who expressed his delight that Obaseki’s re-election had now brought the entire South South zone under the PDP family, urged him to be magnanimous in victory.
He also commended President Muhammadu Buhari, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies for their neutrality in the election.
“The election has been fought and won and it is refreshing to note that our great party, the PDP, has maintained its total control of our geo-political zone, the South south.
“Having won a hard-fought election, I encourage you to be magnanimous in victory by extending an olive branch to your opponents on the other side,” he added.

Edo: Group lauds INEC on conduct of election
The National Consultative Front (NCFront), has lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the success of the just concluded Edo election.
The group’s Head of Publicity, Mr Tanko Yunusa gave the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Sunday.
Gov. Godwin Obaseki, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, was reelected in Saturday’s election, defeating his closest rival, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.
INEC on Sunday, declared Obaseki winner of the election with 307,955 votes to defeat Ize-Iyamu who scored 223,619 votes.
Yunusa who commended INEC on the use of a new technology, the Z-pad, said that the gadget eliminated the rigging machines of collation centers.
Yunusa said: “You must give the process some kudos. When INEC introduced Z-Pad, it helped to checkmate the social maleficence that usually happens at collation centres.
“Now that the collation centres have been eliminated, you see that the people’s vote counted at the end.
“This is a welcome development and there is an improvement in the process as we move on in our democratic setting.
“It was a hard working process that yielded result.
“It also shows that god father’s are demystified and the people are taking their destiny in their hands,” Yunusa said.
Yunusa who is also the National Chairman, National Conscience Party (NCP), commended security agencies and the electorate in spite of actions by the political parties to buy their votes.
“The truth is that the people’s will prevailed. For us, it is an opportunity that the people have been able to show resilience and determination based on their collective resolve that they needed a change of process, the way they voted.
“So they decided to vote for candidate of their choice in spite of all forms of attempts to manipulate the system, but that didn’t work,” he added.

Gov. Umahi congratulates Obaseki; lauds electoral process
Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi has congratulated Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo on his re-election following the release of the result by INEC of the just concluded governorship election.
Mr Francis Nwaze, the Special Assistant to Ebonyi Governor on Media and Publicity, released the congratulatory message to newsmen on Sunday in a statement from Abakaliki.
According to Umahi, though it was a keenly contested election, Obaseki’s re-election has again rekindled hope in the nation’s democracy.
He added that the re-election had also rekindled hope in the electoral process which allowed unhindered, the wishes and aspirations of the people to prevail.
The governor said that Obaseki’s electoral value and his capacity to deliver democratic dividends were fully acknowledged and accepted by Edo people.
Umahi urged the re-elected governor to remember not the former things, but propound approaches for greater Edo which unarguably underlie his re-election.
“I congratulate you on your well-deserved victory. Your re-election has confirmed your electoral appeal in Edo state.
“Remember not the former things, get to work and take Edo State to another greater heights.
“I am happy because your re-election has rekindled faith in the electoral process and our democracy,” he stated.

Kwara Governor commiserates with El-Rufai over death of Zazzau monarch
Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara on Sunday, commiserated with his Kaduna State counterpart, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai over the death of the Emir of Zazzau, Dr Shehu Idris.
The governor sent the condolence message in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, in Ilorin.
“I join our compatriots nationwide to commiserate with His Excellency the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai and the Zazzau emirate on the painful death of the revered monarch who served his people meritoriously and built bridges of friendship and goodwill across the country.
“The death of the monarch is not just a national loss, but is also a personal loss to my own family which has a strong bond with the great Zazzau emirate under which my late father, Alhaji AGF Abdul-Razaq (SAN) held the title of Tafidan Zazzau.
“On behalf of my family, the people and government of Kwara State, I condole with the people and government of Kaduna State and the immediate family of the Emir of Zazzau Dr Shehu Idris.
“May the Almighty Allah grant the monarch Al-Jannah Firdaus, and comfort his family and the entire people of the Emirate,” the statement added.
