Kim Mulkey Leads LSU to National Championship Game in Just Two Seasons
LSU Rallies to Beat Virginia Tech in First Semifinal
LSU’s women’s basketball coach, Kim Mulkey, has taken LSU to the national championship game for the first time in the school’s history. Mulkey, who won three national titles at Baylor University, reached the championship game in just two seasons with LSU. Alexis Morris and Angel Reese led LSU in a big comeback to beat top-seeded Virginia Tech 79-72 in the first semifinal game. They will play Iowa in the national title game on Sunday.
Caitlin Clark and Iowa Beat South Carolina
Iowa, led by fellow AP All-American Caitlin Clark, prevented an all-Southeastern Conference final, beating previously undefeated South Carolina 77-73.
Mulkey is Only the Second Coach to Take Two Different Teams to the National Championship Game
Mulkey has now taken two different teams to the national championship game, only the second coach ever to do so. LSUs women’s basketball team have made it to the final game only once before, having made five national semifinal games in a row from 2004-08. Elizabeth Kitley, a 6-foot-6 senior, had 18 points and 12 rebounds for Virginia Tech, who was in the Final Four for the first time.
LSU had to Rally to Beat Virginia Tech
LSU had to come from behind to beat Virginia Tech despite neither team backing down. Trailing 59-50 after three quarters, LSU rallied to go up by a point during an incredible 15-0 run. The Hokies did not make another basket until King’s 3 with 1:19 left.
Morris and Reese Led LSU’s Comeback
Morris scored 27 points and had two of her misses in the fourth quarter turned into putback baskets by Angel Reese in a big run as LSU rallied to beat top-seeded Virginia Tech 79-72 in the first semifinal game. Reese finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds for LSU, which had to dig deep for the win.
LSU Will Play Iowa in the National Championship Game
LSU are set to play Iowa in their first-ever national championship game on Sunday. Coach Mulkey says the historic moment represents everything she came back to her home state for, and she is going to enjoy every moment.
