Kebbi Gov’s wife wants Nigerians to shun discrimination against Albinos

By Muhammad Lawal

Dr Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, wife of the governor of Kebbi State, on Sunday called on Nigerians to avoid any form of discrimination against people with albinism.

She advocated for the distribution of COVID-19 emergency aid to albinos held at the Medicaid Cancer Foundation office in Birnin Kebbi.

The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that the ceremony also commemorated International Albinism Awareness Day 2021 in Kebbi State.

The governor’s wife, represented by Gov. Atiku Bagudu’s special adviser on empowerment, Hajiya Maimuna Suleiman-Jega, said the appeal has become imperative given the stigma of albinos experienced by others.

She advised Nigerians to show love, care and support to people with albinism.

The governor’s wife, a strong advocate for the social inclusion of vulnerable groups and a leading activist against all forms of discrimination against vulnerable groups, including albinos, said: “Society must change its discriminatory attitude towards abinos .

“Nigerians should know that albinos, due to their lack of melanin, the skin pigment, are vulnerable to skin cancer and eye defects. As such, they need financial support to purchase sunscreen and full-body clothing from childhood.

“I want to call on people to see albinos as an important part of society, capable of contributing to the development of society and the nation as a whole.”

According to her: “I have a special concern and concern for people living with albinism and as such I have had a series of meetings with leaders of people living with albinism to offer them support. .

“Last month we met with the association’s national president as well as the association’s Kebbi State representatives, all with the goal of discussing issues that will support them.

“Likewise, Governor Bagudu has also provided assistance to various programs that will support them. “

Earlier in a welcoming speech, Medicaid Cancer Foundation deputy coordinator Muktar Alkali said the United Nations had accepted the resolution to commemorate International Albinism Awareness Day on June 13 of each year since 2013, to raise awareness of albinism.

This, he said, in an effort to end the discrimination faced by albinos around the world.

“Dr. Shinkafi-Bagudu also requested that we invite the association of albinos to recognize them and salute them for their contributions to the development of society,” he noted.

The Albinos Foundation’s zone coordinator in Kebbi State, Malam Abba Galadima, appreciated the governor’s wife for what he described as “the mother of albinos in the state”.

He thanked Governor Bagudu and his wife for the invaluable gesture of COVID-19 relief aid to the members.

He also advised members of the association to take good care of themselves and to avoid excessive sun and heat which is harmful to their health. (NAA)
