By Taiye Agbaje Former Governor of Ancient Anambra, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, is one of the people attending the trial of Chief of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Ezeife told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he was in court to represent the Ndigbo (the people of Igbo extraction in the world).

NAN also reports that there was increased security in and around the court.

Kanu should be brought before Judge Binta Nyako to answer certain charges against him by the federal government.

NAN on June 29 reported that the judge ordered the head of the IPOB to be remanded in custody at the premises of the Department of State Services (DSS) pending the hearing and decision of the case. .

The order follows a request by the attorney general of the Federation (AGF), Shuaibu Labaran, that Kanu, who skipped bail and was re-arrested, be remanded in custody by the DSS.

The court also granted the request for an expedited hearing of the case to avoid delays in justice and today set the continuation of the trial.

NAN reports that Kanu, who was arrested again on July 27 overseas, allegedly skipped his bail around September 2017.

However, he was brought before trial judge Nyako on June 29 to stand trial.

The judge had, on March 28, 2019, issued an arrest warrant against Kanu after revoking the bond previously granted to him.

Relying on Section 352 (4) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015, the court also approved Kanu’s trial in absentia.

Kanu was arrested on October 14, 2015 on 11 counts relating to terrorism, treason, running an illegal company, publishing libelous matters, illegal possession of firearms and the abusive importation of goods, among others.

He was indicted alongside three other pro-Biafra agitators; Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi.

Shortly after being declared “missing”, Judge Nyako, on February 20, 2018, authorized a separate trial for the other three accused.

Prior to his arrest, the IPOB leader, who has dual nationality, was reportedly seen in various locations outside the country, including Jerusalem and the United Kingdom (United Kingdom).

Kanu, who was the director of Radio Biafra, was initially arrested by security officers on October 14, 2015 upon arriving in Nigeria from his UK base.

He was then brought to justice on January 20, 2016 and remanded in custody at Kuje Prison in Abuja.

After spending about a year and seven months in detention, the lower court on April 25, 2016, released Kanu on bail for health reasons.

To obtain his release, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (PDP-Abia), an accountant, Mr. Tochukwu Uchendu and a Jewish high priest, Emmanu El-Salom Oka BenMadu, signed on April 28, 2016 an undertaking to ensure his appearance in court. . .

Following Kanu’s disappearance after his release on bail, the court on November 14, 2018 ordered the three guarantors to waive the 100 million naira bond they had each agreed to.

All the sureties had since seized the Abuja Court of Appeal to challenge the decision.

Kanu’s attorney, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, also protested the revocation of his client’s bond, even as the court rejected his request for a delay in filing affidavit evidence as to why he skipped the bond.

Ejiofor had insisted that Kanu’s disappearances were due to the unwarranted invasion of his home in Afaraukwu in Abia state by the Nigerian army. (NOPE)
