Joint Defense Council visits Tambura and Namutina, conducts joint patrol with UNMISS

We are aware that the presence of the Joint Defense Board in Tambura has helped bring about relative peace over the past week.

JUBA, South Sudan, September 24, 2021 / APO Group / –

Madelina Marko, 92, is deeply troubled by the ongoing conflict in and around Tambura, Western Equatoria.

“I have lived a long life,” says Madelina. “But despite everything my country has been through, including the civil war, I have never seen a situation like the one happening in our state now. People – women, men, young children – are suffering. There has been too much loss of life and property.

Madelina was addressing a delegation from the Joint Defense Board, which recently visited Namutina and Tambura to see first-hand the impact of the ongoing conflict between armed groups in and around Tambura, which has caused extensive damage, including the death and injury of civilians, the displacement of over 80,000 people, destruction of property and disruption of humanitarian activities.

This important visit was facilitated by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), which is working with all stakeholders, including the government, to stabilize the situation and protect communities.

In addition to meeting with affected community members, the delegation patrolled with UNMISS peacekeepers.

According to Lieutenant General Wizely Welebe Samson, Team Leader of the Joint Defense Council, there is an immediate need to quell future conflicts and provide humanitarian assistance to newly displaced people.

“We recognize that the presence of the Joint Defense Council in Tambura has been instrumental in bringing about relative peace over the past week. Our job is to work with all parties to ensure that this fragile stability is consolidated and that humanitarian agencies can come to provide much needed assistance to the displaced, ”he said.

For its part, following the initial upsurge in violence here, UNMISS immediately deployed boots on the ground and set up a temporary operational base that allows peacekeepers to conduct patrols to deter conflict.

Currently, the Blue Berets provide protection to more than 9,000 displaced people who have sought refuge, facilitate the safe collection of food and water by local communities, and support engagements with political and traditional leaders to promote dialogue and advocacy. reconciliation.

Food aid provided by humanitarian agencies reached over 50,000 newly displaced people in September 2021 and UNMISS facilitated this by providing force protection to aid convoys.
