During an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” the “Hidden Figures” star shared some details about his birthday party in Mexico last week.

Monae revealed that her friends surprise them on their birthday by taking them on a mystery vacation every year. The tradition began when the “Tightrope” singer began receiving recognition for her music back in 2010. Janelle confessed that she “couldn’t afford” to travel until she “made me a little known.”

Las Vegas

Previous birthday getaways have included destinations to Las Vegas and Jamaica. The “Antebellum” actor also revealed that every night he has a different theme.

On the first night, Monae said that “the theme was intergalactic.” The 37-year-old explained that her outfit was put together at the last moment after her friends did not tell them about it until the day before. “I think someone forgot to tell me the memo…but I had this in my closet,” Monae said. “Obviously I’m an android, I’m an alien. I just have these things lying around.”

After snapping a photo of Janelle’s alien outfit, host Jimmy Kimmel quipped, “I hope that’s what aliens are like, I really am!”

Glass Onion

The “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” star explained that the following night was a “hot sexy tea party” themed night where guests wore lingerie. After the tea party, Monae and her friends participated in a murder mystery night.

Monae then revealed that her friends showed their creative side and organized a “wine night where… your clothes have to match your favorite white wine or your favorite red wine.”

Janelle had other ideas and boldly “decided to go topless,” they explained. “Earlier in the day they had told me the theme and I was like, you know what? It’s my birthday, I just want to be free! I want to be so free and I want to let it all flow. So they were all dressed up and I was topless” .

“Oh, you really ruined the whole party! Well, it makes sense because you take the lid off the wine!” Kimmel joked before asking if any family members had been invited to the topless festivities. “You can’t have a guy there when you’re topless, that would be weird.”

“You know what, no,” they agreed. “I personally don’t love that, but my family knows that… I’m the one in the family that goes above and beyond.”

The eight-time Grammy-nominated singer shared that there was a sentimental idea behind her topless appearance.

“Here’s the thing. I wasn’t completely topless, which I asked them to do, which meant a lot to me because they are a community that has lifted me up from my hard times: I asked them to get temporary tattoos.” I like hearts and stars to cover my pinches and everything,” Monae explained. “It was all their love, how they saw me, they came to adorn my body and I wore it all day.”
