Kingston, Jamaica — The highly awaited quarterfinal match of the Jamaica Premier League faced an unexpected setback as lighting issues disrupted play at Sabina Park. The match between Tivoli Gardens and Montego Bay United, scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM, encountered problems shortly after the 36th minute, leaving the pitch inadequately lit.
According to reports, play commenced as planned, but when the stadium lights activated, several bulbs failed to illuminate, resulting in dim conditions on the field. Despite swift attempts by the match officials and technical crew to rectify the situation, the lighting malfunction remained unsolved, prompting officials to halt the game.
As the players waited in uncertainty and the score stood at 0-0, the match was officially postponed after a prolonged delay. Fans expressed disappointment while eager players looked on, all hoping for a swift resolution so that the game could resume.
The disruptions also affected the subsequent quarterfinal encounter set between Portmore United and the defending champions, Cavalier, which was due to kick off at 8:30 PM. Ultimately, both fixtures were called off for the night, leaving supporters with bated breath for updates.
In response to the situation, the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) organizers acted promptly to reschedule the games. The Tivoli Gardens vs. Montego Bay United clash will pick up from the 36th minute this coming Friday at 6:00 PM, while the Portmore United versus Cavalier match will follow at 8:00 PM.
Also, the return legs of the quarterfinals are set for Monday at Sabina Park. Following these matches, the aggregate winners will go on to face competitors Mount Pleasant and Arnett Gardens in the semifinals. Fans and teams alike are now looking forward to the action resuming soon.
