Iran records 5,806 new COVID-19 cases, 1,336,217 in total

Iranian health authorities announced on Monday 5,806 new COVID-19 confirmed infections, taking the country’s overall count to 1,336,217 cases, state TV reported.

Of the newly infected in the past 24 hours, 586 had to be hospitalized, according to the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education’s spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari.

Speaking at her daily briefing, Sadat Lari said 83 new deaths related to the coronavirus were registered between Sunday and Monday, raising the epidemic’s death toll in Iran to 56,886.

She added that 4,348 COVID-19 patients are currently in critical condition in the country’s intensive care units, while 1,125,499 others have recovered or been released from hospitals.

The spokesperson warned about the risk of infection in bakeries in particular, and made a call on the general population to respect health protocols and avoid those places when feeling symptoms similar to those of common cold.

Iran announced its first cases of COVID-19 on Feb. 19, 2020.

Iran and China offered mutual help in combating the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

In mid-February 2020, at the early stage of the coronavirus outbreak in China, Iran lit up the Tehran Azadi (Liberty) Tower to show its solidarity with China, and donated 3 million masks to China. In return, China delivered several shipments of medical supplies to Iran. Later on Feb. 29, a five-member Chinese medical team visited Iran for a month-long mission to help Iran fight the pandemic.
