City, Country – E be like say today na International Lesbian Day, and women for around the world dey shout hooray as dem dey celebrate dem own! From Italy to Naija, women wey no dey fear are marching towards a better world!
As we dey mark this day, we ask some padi women from our Women’s committee, “Which victory you dey proud of?” Abeg, make you sit down, sip your palm wine, and enjoy some sweet gist!
One of dem wey respond na transfeminist, lesbian activist wey come from Italy. She dey talk about how she and her strong crew of fearless Dykes take march for the street of Rome, the capital, to celebrate the first-ever Dyke March wey people don dey wait for! Dem no even allow wetin dem call “ban” stop dem, because Dykes no dey fear nobody. Dem come out heart to heart to celebrate 30 years since the first Dyke March for Washington in 1993. You fit imagine?!
All the women, from lesbian to bisexual, queer, and non-binary, come join hand together as more than 400 lesbians wey don waka from all over Europe and Central Asia come dey for this fourth international lesbian gathering. Na real history dem dey build o, as dem show say even when dem try to scatter dem, unity go always win.
And make I gist you small about last Women’s Month too! Na there dem hold the first-ever National LBQT Conference. This one gather lesbians, bisexuals, queers, and trans leaders from all over the country. Dem come form one strong voice to ensure say dem go dey part of national policies. This one na big win for visibility and inclusion!
Plus, we no fit forget about Portia, the Māori lesbian athlete wey dey carry our flag for the Pacific. She dey show everybody say queer women get power. With her tā moko and rainbow scrunchie, she dey remind us say heritage and sexuality dey mix for pride. On this International Lesbian Day, we dey honor women like Portia wey dey inspire young girls across the Pacific to be who dem be and dream big!
So, as we dey celebrate today, make we no forget say victory dey different for different people. We dey stand for inclusivity as we dey push for policies wey go help all LGBTIQ folks thrive. Who go chop better life if no be all of us working together?
