He said that the president of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria (CFN), Giandomenico Massari, was doing a good job for the development of cycling in Nigeria.

Minister for Youth Development and Sport

“I would like to thank the Nigerian government, especially the Minister for Youth Development and Sport, Sunday Dare, for their support of cycling in Nigeria.

Olympic Games

“Track cycling is one of the Olympic Games and we need to hold African championships for our athletes to qualify for the Games.

Track Championship

“The African CAC Track Championship is an excellent opportunity for talented athletes from different countries to compete and share their experience,” he said.

“We started in 2005 with 16 national federations but now we have 54 national federations.

We spoke with the president of the UCI to establish a training center in Nigeria.

West African

“Nigeria should be an international training hub for the West African region, especially as Nigeria has the best velodrome in Africa,” he said.

South and Central Africa

Wazzam said CAC developed new strategies for this year’s championships, adding that the calendar had seven new events for athletes from East, West, South and Central Africa.

For his part, Massari urged all participating teams to compete with sportsmanship.

He said the championship would help riders gain experience for more championships in the future.

“I am happy to see the large number of participants which represents an increase of approximately 50 per cent from the previous championship held in 2019.

“This is very positive for African track cycling as it shows the desire for more African nations to take part in track cycling,” he said.

NAN reports that 14 countries and host Nigeria are participating in the championship.

The countries are Ghana, Republic of Benin, Republic of Niger, Ivory Coast, Togo, Guinea, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Botswana, Burundi, Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, and Nigeria.
