INEC to provide braille ballot papers for blind voters at Anambra guber polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, said it will provide Braille ballots to visually impaired voters in the Nov. 6 governor’s election in Anambra.

Mr. Nwachuku Orji, INEC resident electoral commissioner in Anambra, said this during a voter education program for visually impaired people on Sunday in Awka.

The program was labeled: “Understanding the Braille Voting Guide”.

Mr Orji, represented by INEC’s voter education and advertising officer in the state, Samuel Nimem, said the commission is committed to ensuring an inclusive election where no one is left behind. side.

“This program aims to ensure that visually impaired voters who can read Braille will be able to make informed decisions about their preferred candidates on election day.

“With the Braille ballot, visually impaired people don’t need a guide to interpret or help them take their thumbprints, which has been the challenge in the past.

“Therefore, their votes will count because they will be able to vote for the candidates of their choice and not be dependent on anyone else,” he said.

Mr. Orji urged people with disabilities, especially the visually impaired, to actively participate in the governor’s election.

In his remarks, Ugochukwu Okeke, President of the Joint National Association of People with Disabilities, JONAPWD, Chapter Anambra, commended INEC for including people with virtual disabilities in the electoral process.

He said: “This is one of the issues we have complained about, which is that our members, especially the visually impaired, find it difficult to vote because the ballots are not in Braille.

“We are happy that the problem has been resolved and we want to assure INEC that the investment in this area will not be in vain.”

Describing the election as crucial for people with disabilities, Okeke called on people with disabilities to come out en masse to vote for their favorite candidates.
