INEC Postpones March 11 Governorship Election, Fixes March 18 as New Date
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria has shifted the date of the governorship and houses of assembly elections from March 11 to March 18 in 24 states.

The commission said it reached the decision because there was inadequate time to back up the data stored on the over 176,000 bimodal voter accreditation system (BVAS) machines used in the presidential and national assembly elections held on February 25, and to reconfigure them for the governorship and state assembly elections.

The decision came after a court of appeal declined a request from Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party, to restrain INEC from reconfiguring the BVAS for the elections.

Obi had also sought an order of the court restraining INEC from tampering with the information in the BVAS machines until the due inspection had been conducted and certified true copies (CTC) of them issued.
