INEC Don Talk Say E Go Get Electoral Reforms Before 2027 Election

Abuja, Nigeria — Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), don tell Nigerians make dem expect electoral reforms before di 2027 general election. Dis announcement come during his speech for di Presidential Villa on Tuesday, as he highlight di Commission’s review of di 2023 general elections with key stakeholders.

Yakubu explain say from di review, dem identify 142 recommendations, but eight of dem require amendments to di constitution or di Electoral Act. He express confidence say dia go make di necessary changes before di next elections.

“We engage with stakeholders and we noted where we need to make improvements. Di National Assembly go organize public hearing to address these recommendations. After dat, dem go submit a bill to di President for assent,” Yakubu explain.

He also clarifies his position amid rumors say he go face removal. “I still remain di Chief Electoral Officer for dis country. I no dey go anywhere,” he reassure di public.

As he celebrate di inauguration of two new INEC Commissioners from di North-West and South-East, he noted say di Commission don finally gather all di required commissioners as di law stipulates, ensuring a full team to spearhead upcoming electoral reforms.

“We don fulfill our requirement by law. With every commissioner in place, we dey ready to implement di reforms we don talk about,” he stated.

“Dis electoral reform we dey plan no be small matter. We focus on making our elections transparent and credible. Ensure say Nigeria fit trust di process wahala nor go come for people wey wan vote,” he add.

Yakubu emphasize di importance of collective efforts from di National Assembly and di INEC to achieve sustainable changes. “We dey work together to ensure say every recommendation wey we don outline get attention wey e deserve,” he say.

As di INEC prepares for di reforms, many Nigerians dey hopeful say dese changes go tackle di issues wey don plague di electoral process in di past. Stakeholders dey call on INEC to ensure say di reforms be not just paper promises but go bring actual change for di upcoming elections.
