The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed the death of three of its employees in a traffic accident in Borno.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Voter Information and Training Committee, Mr. Festus Okoye, confirmed this confirmation in a statement issued Monday in Abuja.
Okoye said the commission received a sad report on Sunday from Mohammed Ibrahim, the state’s Resident Election Commissioner (REC), of a fatal traffic accident involving a number of its staff stationed in the State.
He said Ibrahim informed the commission that an Election Official (EO) and Assistant Election Officers (OAS) traveling from certain areas of the local government to Maiduguri for special training before the conversion of voting points into voting units were involved in the accident.
According to him, the three staff members who lost their lives are: Adamu Mohammed (EO, Biu LGA), Abubakar Joda and Suleiman Umar (AEO, Damboa LGA), while five others were injured.
“The deceased staff, who were originally from Adamawa State, will be buried today, Monday April 19 in Yola.
“The National Supervisory Commissioner of Borno, Adamawa and Taraba States, AVM Ahmed Tijjani-Mu’azu (rtd), will represent the Commission at their funeral, while injured staff are treated at a specialized hospital in Maiduguri. ”
He noted that all three staff members died while on national posting.
“While praying for the rest of their souls, the Commission offers its condolences to their families and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured personnel. ”
Okoye recalled that last week, INEC started a national training of trainers workshop in Abuja, involving heads of operations from all states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Training should be disseminated at the state level throughout the country prior to fieldwork for the physical conversion of voting points into voting units.
The goal is to complete the exercise before Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) resumes on June 28. (NOPE)
