INEC Confirms Postponement of Governorship Election by One Week
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of the governorship election by a week, from March 11, 2023, to March 18, 2023.

The commission cited the need for additional time to carry out the reconfiguration of BVAS systems used for the presidential election on February 25, 2023.

On March 3, the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal had given an ex-parte order for some political parties to inspect materials used in the presidential election, including forensic inspection of over 176,000 BVAS in INEC LGA offices nationwide.

INEC approached the tribunal to reconsider the order, stating that the lack of a clear timeframe for the inspection could disrupt the commission’s ability to conduct the governorship and state assembly elections.
The tribunal held that preventing the reconfiguration of the BVAS would adversely affect the governorship and state assembly elections.
The commission has since confirmed the postponed election date of March 18, 2023.
