INEC confirms arrival of sensitive materials for Kaduna by-election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the arrival of sensitive documents for the by-election for the seat of the Sabon Gari constituency in the Kaduna State House of Assembly.

The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that the seat occupied by Aminu Shagali, a former speaker of the assembly, was declared vacant in April, after he was allegedly accused of running away from the activities of the assembly. ‘assembled for more than 360 days.

The State’s Acting Resident Election Commissioner (REC), Mr. Awwal Mashi, confirmed this during an interview with the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) in Kaduna.

“By sensitive materials we are talking about ballots and all the necessary forms where the results would ultimately be imputed at all levels up to the declaration stage.

“When the documents arrived they were taken to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Kaduna branch and myself together with Bank officials yesterday, I handed the documents to the electoral body of local government where the election will take place, “Mashi explained.

The official assured the residents of Sabon Gari of a smooth exercise, adding that other technical details, including security, were the responsibility of the respective officers.

NAN reports that INEC announced June 19 as the due date for the by-election to fill the vacant seat of Aminu Shagali, the member representing Sabon Gari constituency in the assembly.

NAN reports that the elections will be held in seven local government wards, including Chika, Muchia, Jushin Waje, Hanwa, Dogarawa, Unguwan Gabas and Zabi wards.

No less than 128,051 registered voters are expected to take part in the poll, for which five political parties present candidates, INEC said.

Political parties include: the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Democratic Action Party (ADP). (NAA)
