Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: Mixed Reviews after Cannes Premiere
The anticipation for the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise has been building for years, with fans eagerly waiting for the return of Harrison Ford as the adventurous archaeologist. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny promised a return to form to a young Harrison Ford, with a story that sees Jones embark on a global search for a device built by Greek philosopher Archimedes that is said to manipulate the fissures of time. The issue? A former Nazi is also on the hunt for the time-travel device with the hopes of changing the course of history in his favor.
The film’s opening chunk uses technology to de-age Harrison Ford before the time machine spits him out in his current form. Vulture critic Bilge Ebiri writes, “The damn thing is fun,” praising director James Mangold’s ability to keep the action thrilling despite missing Steven Spielberg’s musical flair for extravagant action sequences.
However, not all critics agreed with Ebiri’s assessment of “fun.” A variety critic called the fifth installment a “dutifully eager but ultimately rather joyless piece of nostalgic hokum.”
The first reviews following Dial of Destiny’s Cannes premiere were mixed. While some praised the film’s action sequences and Ford’s return to the iconic role, others found the story lacking and the nostalgia factor falling flat.
Only time will tell if Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be a successful addition to the beloved franchise or a disappointing misstep.
