If You Want to Win: Follow the Tom Brady Approach
Tom Brady is considered as one of the greatest winners in the history of sports. He has won seven Super Bowl’s over 23 seasons, a feat that is difficult to repeat given the hard salary cap and the constant turnover of players in the league. Brady’s career model has always been to take less money so that the team can keep other key players around. This is quite different from other teams, wherein players usually depart for larger contracts once their star quarterback gets the big deal.
Recently, Jalen Hurts and Lamar Jackson were made the highest paid players in NFL history by the Philadelphia Eagles and Baltimore Ravens, respectively. Although they deserve their deals, these contracts could hurt the all-around strength of their teams moving forward since they may have to move on key contributors elsewhere to make room.
While no one can argue that Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow are among the top two quarterbacks in the league, they have chosen to follow the Brady approach to some degree. Mahomes believes that legacy and winning rings are more important than making money. Although he has already signed his 10-year, $450 million deal in 2020, it sees him making around $39 million per season at this point in the deal, significantly less than the averages of Hurts’ and Jackson’s deal.
Burrow has yet to sign his extension, but he has made it clear that he is not looking to be made the highest paid player. He wants to see his star receivers Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase remain with the team to greatly increase their Super Bowl aspirations.
Following Brady’s approach may not be easy, but it is a surefire way to guarantee longevity and success in the league. Taking less money and prioritizing the team’s strength can lead to a string of championships and a lasting legacy.
