How Amina Abrahams turned her atchar business into a profitable company
From financial survival to a nationwide supplier
Amina Abrahams started her atchar business as a means of supporting herself and her two children after losing her job at a bank and going through a divorce. She approached Rukeya Akoojee, a close family friend, for advice, who suggested the atchar business and taught her how to make it. At first, only family and friends purchased Amina’s products, but after she approached a Shoprite buyer 12 years ago, her business began to grow.
A nationwide agreement with Shoprite
With Shoprite’s backing of her product, Exotic Taste, Amina was able to increase her business’ footprint. Shoprite recently agreed to sell Exotic Taste under their Homegrown private label brand nationwide. Today, Amina’s business has grown to 30 staff and a 544-square metre factory in Parow.
Learned from her grandmother
Amina attributes her success to the soft skills she learnt from her grandmother, who ran a successful transport business. She believes that learning how to deal with people and honouring your word are key to running a successful business.
Advice to others
Amina’s advice to others is to never give up on your goals and to have patience and perseverance when dealing with life’s obstacles. She has overcome stumbling blocks in both her personal and business journey to reach her current success.
