MP Rt Hon Matt Hancock appointed to the United Nations (UN) as Special Representative for Financial Innovation and Climate Change for the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa

I am delighted to join the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in its impressive efforts to help Africa strengthen its economic recovery from the pandemic

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa has appointed MP Rt Hon Matt Hancock as Special Representative on Financial Innovation and Climate Change to support its work on economic and social recovery.

Matt Hancock will advance UN work to support Africa’s path to recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic by pushing financial investments in sustainable economic development, working with organizations like IMF, G20 and COP26 in partnership with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. He will exercise this role in addition to his parliamentary duties as Member of Parliament for West Suffolk in the United Kingdom.

“I am delighted to join the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in its impressive efforts to help Africa strengthen its economic recovery from the pandemic and the sustainability of its development. I deeply want this to happen not only because of the strong economic opportunity, but because we share a vision of Africa as a long-term strategic partner. “

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa asked Matt Hancock to take on this role based on his expertise in economic policy, his experience in managing financial markets at the Bank of England and his in-depth understanding government and multilateralism through his various roles in the ministerial cabinet.

“We are confident that his expertise and leadership will deliver immediate and long-term impact, especially in securing long-term financial growth,” said Vera Songwe, Deputy Secretary General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa. .

The mandate of ECA is to promote economic and social development, foster intra-regional integration and promote international cooperation for the development of Africa. .

Specifically, Hancock will work on policy development to deepen financial markets and develop green investment facilities to tackle climate change and support sustainable development.
