Hijrah: Gov. Oyetola canvasses religious tolerance, peaceful co-existence

Gov. Gboyega Oyetola of Osun has called for religious tolerance, unity and peaceful co-existence among the residents of the state.

Oyetola said harmonious relationship among religious groups would further strengthen his administration’s resolve to bring about the desired growth and development to the state.

The governor said this during the celebration of Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1441, on Saturday in Osogbo.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that the event was organised by the Osogbo Muslim Community.

The governor urged Muslims to imbibe the lessons of Hijrah by staying away from sinful practices and other conducts that would not add value to the state and the country at large.

He said: “The peaceful co-existence among religious groups in the state of ‘Omoluabi’ will further strengthen our resolve to ensure growth and development.

“I hereby enjoin all the residents of our state, irrespective of their faith, to continue to live together harmoniously, with religious tolerance and understanding.

“It is with utmost pleasure that I join the Muslim community all over the world today to celebrate the Islamic New Year, Hijra 1441 AH.”

In his welcome address, the President of Osun Muslim Community, Alh. Mustafa Olawuyi, commended the governor for being supportive to the development of the Community in the state.

The Guest Lecturer, Prof. Abdul-Rahman Oloyede of the University of Ibadan, called on Nigerians to shun corruption and other social vices capable of undermining the corporate integrity and dignity of the country in the comity of nations.

Oloyede, who spoke on the theme: “Corruption and Antisocial Behaviours in Nigeria: Withal Muslims?”, urged governments at all levels to promote the teaching and learning of civic education and religious studies in schools.
