The Southern African Development Community (SADC) convened an extraordinary summit meeting this week in Lilongwe to discuss the organization’s efforts and deployment to restore peace and security in the northern Cabo Delgado province of Mozambique. The Summit was officially opened and chaired by His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, in his capacity as Chairman of SADC, and was attended by heads of state and high-ranking government officials from SADC members. SADC. The meeting considered the latest reports on the evolution of the situation in the province and recognized that the SADC Mission in Mozambique had made considerable progress in combating acts of terrorism and extreme violence. The mission’s mandate has been extended for another three months.
