Brigade spokesman Capt. Joseph Akubo confirmed this while speaking to reporters in Owerri on Monday.
Akubo said the incident occurred after soldiers were recruited into the oil-rich community to control youth unrest and other crime in the area.
He explained that unidentified people attacked and killed a truck driver on Saturday, prompting increased patrols.
“The soldiers were carrying out a routine patrol in the area when they were attacked.
“Two days ago, a truck driver was killed; along with other criminal activities that had required increased patrolling.
“The older ones were on normal patrol when they were attacked,” he said.
Akubo, however, said he had yet to confirm the casualty figure, as the youths were still engaging the soldiers in a fierce battle.
“I cannot tell you the number of casualties because the armed youths continue to attack our men who are taking refuge in the neighborhood buildings,” he said.
