Group urges youths to shun rape, child sex abuses

The NGO Leadership Change and Development Initiative (ILDC) on Thursday urged young people to avoid rape and sexual abuse of children (CSA) for a greater future and better.

The group’s National Coordinator, Chief Ugochukwu Nnam, made the call in an interview with the Nigerian News Agency in Abuja, describing the rape and sexual abuse of children as a gross violation of human rights.

Nnam said the rape and the CSA were harmful to both the victim and the perpetrator.

He added that “any sexual relationship without consent is rape and is harmful to both people.

“Victims would be physically and mentally hurt with the attendant stigma, while predators should be shamed and imprisoned under the Violence Against Persons Prohibited Act (VAPP).

The coordinator therefore advised young people, especially boys, to always show honor when dealing with girls or women.

He called on young men to always treat girls as future mothers who deserve respect and protection.

According to him, boys and men should not act as predators but rather as protectors of their female counterparts.

He explained that “I think it is more honorable to approach a lady gently if you admire her and seek her consent than to force her or involve you in any act of violence.”

He then praised states that had domesticated the VAPP Act of 2015 and called on others to do the same.

Rape is any illegal carnal knowledge of a man or a woman.

While rape is not a new or strange criminal act globally, it assumed a threatening dimension after the imposition of the blockade in many countries, including Nigeria, which came with the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020.
