Group urges FG to ensure ecosystem restoration

By Nefishetu Yakubu

An NGO, Environmental Rights Action / Friends of the Earth (ERA / FoN), on Tuesday called on the federal government to develop a 10-year roadmap for ecosystem restoration for the country.

Dr Godwin Uyi-Ojo, Executive Director of ERA / FoN, made the call during a conference to commemorate World Environment Day 2021 in Benin.

Uyi-Ojo said restoring the ecosystem will protect and improve the livelihoods of millions of people in Nigeria.

He also called on the government at all levels to declare a state of environmental emergency to ensure ecosystem restoration.

According to him, the roadmap and the state of emergency have become necessary, in order to raise awareness and restore nature.

“For decades, scientific evidence has shown that the impacts and pressures of our productive activities are linked to our additive dependence on mining and fossil fuel extraction.

“Extensive animal husbandry, industrial agriculture, gigantic infrastructure, fishing and forestry have caused serious environmental degradation.

“Nigeria should initiate the energy transition from its dependence on fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, in order to reduce the rate of environmental degradation and ecosystem disruption,” he said.

According to him, the government should strengthen regulatory agencies to enforce regulations and laws, in order to support ecosystem restoration and conservation. (NAA)
