Grant: New match schedule to give coaches the opportunity to build

Hosting players three or four days before the game, as is the case now – and sometimes players still miss the first practices after their flights: it really is a nightmare

ZURICH, Switzerland, September 23, 2021 / APO Group / –

International match schedule under review, no decision having been taken from 2024; Avram Grant calls for an end-of-cycle schedule; The former Israel coach said the reform proposals were a “win-win” for clubs and national teams.

Avram Grant called for changes to the international match schedule, saying the status quo is “a nightmare” for coaches and the reform proposals would benefit clubs, national teams and players at all levels.

Grant says coaches need time to work with their players to build squads and the former Israel and Ghana national team coach added that removing unnecessary matches from the top athlete calendar can benefit to all football players.

“Receiving players three or four days before the game, as it is now – and sometimes players still miss the first practice after their flights: it’s a real nightmare,” Grant said. “It’s not good to coach a national team because you can’t build anything.

“The suggestion here is to do it over a longer period of time and that’s fantastic for the coach and the players. For me, it gives me the opportunity to build a team, develop it and give it ideas. I can tell you that I started each meeting by showing them the strengths or the things to improve since the last one. [international] game, because I don’t know if gambling is still on their mind.

The views of the main players in football are being considered as part of a broad consultation process on the future of men’s football, led by FIFA’s Global Football Development Manager Arsène Wenger.

FIFA is facilitating the debate on how the match schedule should look from 2024 with a view to optimizing the schedule for all stakeholders, listening to a wide range of views before making proposals. The review was requested by the overwhelming majority of FIFA member associations at the 71st FIFA Congress in order to make the calendar more suitable for modern times.

“When I was a kid, the friendly matches were very cool and very exciting because there were no other competitions. Now in qualifying let’s be honest, [there are] some boring games, you know players don’t like it, coaches don’t like it and fans don’t like it. So if we have more meaningful games, that’s fantastic.
