By Peter Uwumarogie

The Gombe State government has started distributing palliatives to poor and vulnerable people in the state, targeting as many as 50,000 households.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place in the Dukku local government area on Saturday.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya, in his remarks, said his administration was determined to support the poor and vulnerable in the state.

Yahaya said the initiative to distribute palliatives was the result of flooding seen in parts of the state the previous year, as well as the emergence of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).

He said the poor and the vulnerable were hit the hardest, whenever there were crises, floods and even a pandemic hence government intervention to ensure they were supported as a means to bring them help.

Yahaya added that the state government is targeting as many as 50,000 households this year.

He pointed out that by 2020, his administration had supported a total of 66,000 households, which he said translated into 600,000 beneficiaries.

The governor assured that his administration would continue to support the poor and vulnerable, adding that the state government had spent more than 771 million naira to support flood victims in the LGAs of Nafada, Dukku, Funakaye and Yamaltu. Deba.

Yahaya cautioned against any attempt to misappropriate the items, ordering that the items be given only to targeted vulnerable people in accordance with the intent of the stopgaps.

Earlier, Mr. Mannassah Jatau, the Deputy Governor, explained that the distribution of items would be done with fairness and equity.

“The same items here will be the same for distribution in other parts of the state,” he said.

According to him, 2,998 households should benefit in 10 LGAs to start.

For his part, the Emir of Dukku, Alhaji Haruna, Rashid II, congratulated the governor for his support for the poor and vulnerable in his emirate, adding that these articles would help alleviate the suffering of the population.

One of the beneficiaries, Malam Bappah Aisami, told the Nigeria News Agency (NAN) that the articles would help her support her family, noting that this came at a time when Ramadan fasting was about to start.

“We pray to Allah to bless the government for giving us food. I am grateful and happy because the articles will help me a lot, ”he said.

NAN reports that the items distributed included rice, sugar, corn, salt, macaroni, spaghett
