Give me parting gift by winning AFCON trophy, Ahmed Musa charges teammates

Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has asked his teammates to win the 2021 African Cup of Nations trophy, AFCON, in Cameroon as a parting gift for him.

Musa made the call at a pre-game press conference Monday in Garoua, ahead of the Super Eagles’ opening game against Egypt.

The Super Eagles and the Pharaohs of Egypt will face off in what could be the group’s choice of battles at Stade Roumdé Adjia starting at 5pm on Tuesday.

However, according to the 29-year-old, he would be open to receiving invitations if he is called up for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Musa, who is the player with the most international appearances on the national team, commissioned his teammates to win the AFCON 2021 trophy as a parting gift for him.

He revealed that this would be the last time he would play in an AFCON.

“I think this is my last AFCON in sha Allah.

“I’ve told the guys that this is the only gift they can give me because this is my last AFCON and the guys told me they’re ready.

“My first AFCON was in South Africa in 2013 and we ended up winning it, while my second appearance was in Egypt and we won bronze,” he said.

Musa, in his 12 years playing for the Eagles, has scored 16 goals, including four in different World Cups.

He is Nigeria‘s most capped player after scoring his 101st cap in the team’s 2-0 win over the Central African Republic on October 10, 2021.

The feat saw him overtake former captains Joseph Yobo and Vincent Enyeama, who have 100 appearances for Nigeria.

However, Musa, who made his Nigerian debut against Madagascar in a 2012 African Cup of Nations qualifying match on September 5, 2010, said he would still be available if invited to the World Cup qualifiers.

He added that the match between the Super Eagles and the Pharaohs would be an open game as both teams had a chance to win the day.

“I will always do my best when called, be it in the tournament or in the playoffs. I always want to do my best ”.

“Both teams have good players, they have a chance to win. We will do our best to win tomorrow.

Egyptian captain Mohamed Sallah, for his part, said that while the Super Eagles were a formidable team, he and his teammates would do everything in their power to defeat them.

“I don’t think there is a need to answer him because he is someone I respect a lot.

“Super Eagles have a good team, but we would do our best to defeat them.” he said.

Egypt coach Carlos Queiroz said before the match that the match would be a good test for his team.

“It is a pleasure to play against a great team like Nigeria with World Cup players.

“We want to play against the best in the tournament and this is a good test.”
