Girona, the Hipster’s Choice in La Liga, Is Being Led by Ukraine’s New Sporting Export
Girona’s High-Scoring Style
If you’re looking for high-scoring football in Spain, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and other Champions League contenders are the logical choices. But Girona, propped up by one of the season’s canniest signings, is an even better option.
Girona has been the highest scoring team in the top tier this season, racking up over 80 goals in their league encounters. This attacking success is only beaten by leader Barcelona and Real Madrid, and is spread throughout the season so that 11 different scorers have contributed substantially to the cause. In fact, Girona’s defensive record is just one goal worse than their offensive record, making for some entertaining high-scoring encounters.
Ukraine’s Brightest New Football Talent
The Ukrainian winger Viktor Tsygankov has been a particular star for Girona since his transfer from Dynamo Kiev and is arguably one of the league’s most exciting players, currently averaging almost a goal every 90 minutes. Tsygankov’s form makes Girona the stylish, intriguing dark horse of La Liga, rarely settling for 0-0 draws.
Tsygankov’s acquisition was a bargain at just €5m ($5.5m), and the player’s rising value means he may well prove to be one of the smartest signings of the season. Even greater than his monetary worth, though, is his value as a representative for Ukraine. With the country suffering from ongoing tensions with Russia and some displaced fans seeking refuge elsewhere, sporting exports like Tsygankov help to inspire and entertain.
Girona’s Potential and Tsygankov’s Promise
Despite Tsygankov’s contributions, Girona is still a team in danger of being relegated at the end of the season, with every team in the bottom half of the league currently struggling to avoid the drop. It will be up to Tsygankov and other team members to secure enough points to ensure survival.
Girona’s manager, Míchel, will have to balance a potentially more defensive approach with the high-scoring style that has brought the team into contention in the first place, starting with a crucial derby against their rivals Espanyol. It’s a critical time for Tsygankov, but he’s ready for the challenges ahead.
