Giant cream swirl sculpture unveiled at London’s Trafalgar Square

A giant swirl of cherry-topped cream has been revealed in London’s famous Trafalgar Square as the latest sculpture work to occupy an unused plinth.

The work, by British artist Heather Phillipson, measures 9.4 meters and weights 9 tonnes, and is the tallest to date to occupy the so-called Fourth Plinth in the square, one of the capital’s main tourist attractions.

The vast physical and digital sculpture features a giant swirl of whipped cream, a cherry, a fly and a drone that transmits a live feed of Trafalgar Square.

According to City Hall, the work, entitled THE END, suggests both exuberance and unease, responding to Trafalgar Square as a site of celebration and protest, that is shared with other forms of life. The live feed of Trafalgar Square picked up by the drone’s camera is visible on a dedicated website giving a sculpture’s eye perspective.

The Guardian newspaper quoted the artist as saying that she came up with the idea for her sculpture in 2016, the year of Britain’s European Union referendum, and Donald Trump winning the United States presidential election.

The Fourth Plinth is known across the world for bringing world class contemporary art to London’s most prominent historical public square.

For two decades it has showcased the works of great artists from around the world. The sculpture, the 13th work to occupy the plinth, will remain in place until the spring of 2022.
