Geography education essential for sustainable devt.–Expert

Dr Chidinma Jeremiah, the President of Oyo State Teachers Geography Association, says geography education is essential for sustainable and all-round development of the society.

Jeremiah, in an interview with the Nigeria News Agency on Friday in Ibadan, said there was need to sensitise the populace on the importance of the subject.

“The association brings geography teachers together to promote the study of the subject in our secondary schools and encourage students to study geography.

“From the trends now, geography is what we make use of on a daily basis. It is important for science and mathematics education in particular,” she said.
She said the association in 2020 intended to create more awareness and expose people to the need for geography to be a core subject in Nigeria’s education curriculum.

“We intend to have a conference where all teachers of geography in Oyo State would be invited.
“There will be paper presentations and seasoned experts will be at hand to educate people on relevant topics bordering on geography, ” she said.
David Afolayan
Also speaking, Mr David Afolayan, Chief Executive Officer, GISKonsult, Ibadan, said geography plays a major role in the development of technology.
Afolayan said early introduction of young students to knowledge of geography would be a great advantage in life.
He said it would guide them to understand their world and choose a career path that would be rewarding.
