The newly appointed Commander of the Army War College Nigeria (AWCN), Maj.-Gen. Bamidele Alabi, on Wednesday, took over as the fifth commander of the college.
Alabi replaced the Major General. Solomon Udounwa, who was transferred to Army Headquarters and appointed Chief of Services/Special Programs (Army).
The university's public relations officer, Major Muhammed Maidawa, revealed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.
In his farewell address, the outgoing commander, Udounwa, congratulated Alabi, whom he described as an integral part of the college, having served as a senior staff and director of studies before his recent appointment as commander.
Uduonwa, while wishing him a fruitful and successful term, urged the university community to provide the same cooperation and support that was given to his successor to enable the university to continue to be successful.
Alabi, however, vowed to build on the immediate previous commander's legacy, praising him for his determined leadership and decades-long mentorship.
The Nigerian News Agency reports that Alabi was among the five pioneering senior management staff of the university when it was established in 2017.
He is a member of the Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA) Regular Course 41 and the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps.
The new commander has held various positions in the command, staff and training capacity, including, Senior Staff Member at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Jaji.
He was also Commander of the Nigerian Battalion 29 (NIBATT29) of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) and Commander of the 3rd Kano Brigade, prior to his appointment as Director of Studies and Coordination at AWCN.
Alabi is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) and a Senior Executive Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School.
Some of the key military courses he attended include the Staff Course at AFCSC, the Advanced Command and Staff Course in the UK and the Higher Defense Strategic Studies Course at the Nigerian National Defense College.
