Gabby Petito’s parents obtain letter from Brian Laundrie’s mother mentioning burying a body

The parents of Gabby Petito have received a copy of a letter that Brian Laundrie’s (Petito’s former fiancé) mother wrote to him, which contained references to burying a body and getting a shovel. Petito’s family attorney stated in a Sarasota County, Florida courtroom that the letter referred to criminal acts, which Roberta Laundrie admitted she would commit. The Petitos sued the Laundries for emotional distress in connection with Gabby Petito’s death, during a trip with Brian Laundrie across the Western US. After returning home without Gabby, Laundrie disappeared and later died under allegedly suspicious circumstances.

Gabby Petito’s remains were later discovered and identified as victims in a homicide by manual strangulation. The letter in question, found in Brian Laundrie’s backpack after his death, was undated and instructed the recipient to burn the contents without reading, but was still given to Petito’s parents. Attorneys for Brian Laundrie’s parents fought against handing over the letter, stating that it was irrelevant to the civil lawsuit brought by Petito’s parents.

Still, after a long back and forth, all parties agreed that confidentiality was not necessary for the letter to remain sealed, and that the plaintiff’s lawyers should receive a copy of it. Reilly, the Petito family attorney, stated that he was unsure if they would share the letter with the press. The judge will issue her ruling in response to the motion to dismiss the case soon. Meanwhile, the Laundries have argued in court filings that they had no duties to Petito.
