FRSC to begin special operations to tackle overloading, impatient driving in Kaduna zone

The Kaduna zonal office of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Thursday said it would commence special operations in Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Jigawa to tackle overloading and reckless driving.

Aliyu Bawa-Datsama, Zonal Commanding Officer, RS1 Kaduna, said during a retreat for officers of the zone in Kaduna.

Bawa-Datsama said that the operation would also involve local councils in tackling illegal motor parks.

“The major causes of road crashes are over speeding, overloading and impatience. These are the problems and we will use mobile court to handle them.

“We will conduct weekly exercise in all commands and will stagger it. If Kaduna is doing today, Kano will do tomorrow or Jigawa or Katsina .

“We have also started arresting trailers carrying big containers and people. We are prosecuting them till the owner comes.

“We sit to rub minds. We noticed a high volume of traffic which causes increase in road crashes. We see overloading and increase in people involved in crashes,’’ he said.

The FRSC zonal commander said that officers would discuss proactive measures to check overloading, and directed all commands to mount patrols at entry and exit points in major towns.

He said that overloaded vehicles would be stopped and the drivers compelled to refund passengers their fares, before being handed over to mobile court or booked.

“This will be done in conjunction with sister security agencies. We will also take care of the public enlightenment for motorists and passengers.

“ We also discovered that most of the vehicles that overload come from illegal parks; we are going to be very serious with the issue.

“We will enlighten passengers to resist overloading. There is no how a driver will carry excess,’’ Bawa –Datsama said.

He further said commanders are directed to liaise with states and local governments to eradicate the number of illegal parks.

He also said that the command would use enforcement of number plate registration to check insecurity.
