Four Enugu para-athletes get national call up for Olympics qualifier, says coach



Silver Ezeikpe, the South-East representative in the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN), has confirmed the call up of four para-athletes from Enugu, for camping in Dubai ahead of the Olympic qualifiers.

Ezeikpe, who doubles as the coach of Enugu Para-Athletes, made the confirmation of their invitation in an interview with the Nigeria News Agency in Enugu on Tuesday.

Ezeikpe said that the four athletes were selected after the just concluded five-day national trials held in Abuja, between Jan. 14 and Jan. 19.

The coach said that himself, Chukwuebuka Orji, Onyinye Ogbu and Ekene Ene were selected for the championship in Dubai which would also serve as qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in Japan.

He said that the national camp for the Dubai championship and Olympic qualifiers would open on Feb. 20 to end on March 9.

”The Dubai championship will start on March 10th to 18th,” he said.

Accounting for their performance in Abuja, the coach said that the athletes won laurels to the surprise of their fans.

The coach said that he took 10 athletes to the championship that competed in field and track events.

”Chukwuebuka competed in 100m and 400m and won Gold medal in 400m but finished fourth in 100m.

” I competed in Javelin class F44 and won Gold medal while Ekene Ene competed in discus throw F57 and won bronze medal .

”Onyinye Ogbu won bronze in short-put class F46 as Victor Mba won Gold medal in short put class F56 and silver medal in discus.

”Chukwunweike Ugwu grabbed Gold medal in short put class F57, ” Ezeikpe said.

Ezeikpe regretted that Enugu athletes were still waiting for directive to go into camping, saying the athletes were ready and roaring to go.
