The explosion brought down the vehicle and pushed it into a ditch on the side of the road, it added.

The targeted police officers were on their way to perform security tasks for polio teams deployed throughout the city to inoculate children with vaccines.

The official added that the initial investigation found that around 25 kg of explosives were used in the explosion.

Police and security forces have cordoned off the area and have launched a search operation in the area.

Local media reports said the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had claimed responsibility for the attack.

The blast came after the militant group announced the termination of a ceasefire agreement with the Pakistani government, threatening to launch attacks across the country. ■
