Former PM, Ukhnaa Khurelsukh, wins Mongolia’s presidential election

Former Prime Minister Ukhnaa Khurelsukh won the presidential election in Mongolia, the national news agency Montsame reported, citing preliminary results.

Khurelsukh won with 99.3 percent of the polling stations counted, the Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) candidate getting around 68 percent of the vote, Montsame reported.

The electoral authority was to announce the final official results by Thursday afternoon.

Dangaasuren Enkhbat of the National Labor Party got around 20.1 percent of the vote while Sodnomzunduin Erdene of the Democratic Party got just 6 percent.

Khurelsukh would replace Khaltmaa Battulga of the Democratic Party, who took office in 2017 and was not allowed to run due to the 2019 amendments.

The amended constitution states that a new president would be appointed for a single six-year term.

Khurelsukh resigned as prime minister in January following protests over his government’s response to the pandemic, which he said was orchestrated by Battulga.

Mongolia was a semi-presidential republic of about 3.3 million people located between Russia and China. (dpa / NAN)
