The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, underlined Morocco’s pioneering role in immigration, the fight against terrorism, peacekeeping and climate action .

Morocco is resolutely pursuing the implementation of its pioneering national strategy on immigration and asylum, in accordance with the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI for a human, responsible and united governance of migration issues, declared Bourita, by videoconference. in Morocco’s speech at the high-level segment of the 76th United Nations General Assembly.

He recalled in this sense that His Majesty King Mohammed VI has been appointed champion of the African Union on the migration issue, noting that Morocco also hosted in Marrakech in December 2018 the conference for the adoption of the Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration.

In addition, Rabat is now home to the headquarters of the AU’s first Immigration Observatory, he added.

The Minister noted that Morocco’s adherence to counterterrorism efforts, as well as its continued commitment to the Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF), were crowned with the inauguration in Rabat of the Office of the Program of United Nations for the fight against terrorism and training in Africa.

Also, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad praised the role of peacekeepers, especially during a pandemic, while paying tribute to the souls of all those who have made enormous sacrifices to the service of the values ​​and noble principles of the UN.

In this sense, he indicated that Morocco and France intend to organize the 2nd ministerial conference on the maintenance of peace in the French-speaking environment, which hosts nearly half of the peacekeeping operations of the UN.

The Minister recalled, in this regard, Morocco’s current participation in the UN peacekeeping forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic and South Sudan, as well as its contribution to the adaptation of operations. of peacekeeping to contemporary issues and challenges. in line with the “initiative to strengthen action for peacekeeping” launched by the UN Secretary General in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

On the issue of disarmament, Mr. Bourita indicated that Morocco was elected president of the First Committee of the 76th General Assembly of the United Nations, stressing that it is the first time that the Kingdom has assumed the presidency of this important commission in charge of disarmament and international security.

This choice by Morocco, on behalf of the African continent, is a UN recognition of its active, committed and credible role in international efforts to fight the arms race, whether nuclear or conventional, as well as of its action in favor of regional and international peace, security, and stability, he noted.

Minister Bourita concluded by stressing the need to take urgent, effective and coordinated measures to strengthen the role of the UN as a space dedicated to international cooperation, adding that Morocco, animated by constant commitment and a spirit of seriousness and responsibility, will continue to fully play its role within the mechanisms of the multilateral organization, in order to contribute to strengthening its legitimacy, effectiveness and influence.
