Football scouting programme begins in Ilorin

By Olayinka Owolewa

A football scouting program, titled “Super Talent Football Scouting Tournament”, started on Monday in Ilorin on the grounds of the Kwara Football Academy, with the participation of players from 12 youth clubs.

The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that the players are from four states and are expected to show off their footballing skills over the five days of the competition.

The tournament, hosted by Abraysports FC president Abdullahi Yusuf, is scheduled to end on Friday, with the final set to take place at the Kwara Stadium Complex in Ilorin.

The competition is grassroots and aims to expose the Kwara, Lagos, Edo and Osun teams to foreign scouts.

The teams include Dynamic FC, Abraysports FC, Olusosun United, JK Soccer Academy, Kwara Football Academy, LA Planet Sports Academia and House of Prayers Sports Academy.

The others are Olansile Football Academy, Alan FC, Laycon Academy, Metrice FC and Amapro Selected.

Two members of the recruiting team, England-based Busayo Akinyemi and Tomas Bahnik of the Czech Republic, have said the player (s) chosen for the tournament will go to try out abroad.

“They will be taken to clubs in Europe for trials and possibly be able to sign a professional contract, if they impress the club,” they said.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the tournament, Bahnik, who said he has ties across Europe, said the aim was to find good players and develop them in the European program.

Akinyemi, who observed that talent abound in Nigeria, stressed that they need a platform to be discovered and prepared for stardom.

He said their mission was to help Nigerian academies and football, targeting players between the ages of 18 and 20.

Akinyemi added that plans are underway to organize football coaching camps.

“This will be done as a way to prepare coaches to train their players and teams in accordance with the general requirements of recruiting programs.”

Earlier, the president of AbraySports said the tournament was hosted by First Class Sports Marketing in conjunction with Abraysports International.

Yusuf said that in recent times the development of the sport from the grassroots has been ignored and this has derailed the progress and development of the sport in the country.

“This is the essence of organizing the tournament in my state. I want to provide a platform for grassroots players in the country to find a club in Europe.

“This is because, in turn, it will help promote the state to the world,” he said.

Yusuf then urged all participating players and teams to play by the rules of the game (NAA)
