By Sylvester Thompson

The The Minister of State for Science, Technology and Innovation, Alhaji Mohammed Abdullahi, has called on Nigerian researchers and innovators to focus on national challenges, has called on Nigerian researchers and innovators to focus on national challenges including that of power generation.

The minister made the call in a lecture he delivered at the Igbinedon University, Okada in Edo, according to a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by his Public Relations Officer, Maryam Zakari.

He said  that the ministry had made efforts to establish strong interactions between industry and researchers through programmes such the Annual Science, Technology and Innovatiom Expo.

Abdullahi said there was the need for Nigeria’s education system to  deploy more knowledge for the nation’s socio-economic growth.

“Industries are equally invited to create opportunities for research and development in knowledge institutes, with the purpose of reducing importation of foreign technologies and support more technology transfers,” he said.

According to him, Government-Academia-Industry  model is the most reliable way to achieve rapid commercialisation of research findings.

Abdullahi said that the model would drive national development.

He added that economic diversification would be achieved by focusing on scientific research and innovations.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, said that the university was championing education revolution in the country through innovation and entrepreneurship research.
