Flying Officers Cup: Naija Ratels, Ghana Police Ladies settle for draw in opener

By Ijeoma Okigbo

Naija Ratels Football Club began their 2021 Aviation Officers Cup campaign on Sunday with a goalless draw against the Ghana Police Ladies at the Area 10 Sports Complex, Abuja, on Sunday.

The opening match of the women’s pre-season football tournament started with Naija Ratels dominating the game but couldn’t use her scoring chances, all thanks to goalkeeper Asantewaa from Ghana who put a good picture of the game. ‘itself by stalling the score.

Ratels went to great lengths to honor the scoreboard, especially in the 24th minute when Olamide Adugbe worked the ball superbly to the right, passing Ghanaian Jane Ayieyam, but her shot was just too weak.

The 31st minute saw Deborah Afriyie of Ghana launch a good run, but failed to pass an accurate pass to teammate Cynthia Adjei as Seun Ai and Paulina Ali created a formidable back wall for Ratels.

The Ghanaians also tried to open the scoring in the 63rd minute via Adjei, but Doris Ohia made a superb save to prevent Ratels from conceding a goal.

At the end of the game, Naija Ratels’ coach Bankole Olowookere said the team would keep working until they were successful.

“We give thanks for the game and of course a draw is better than losing.

“We dominated the game and had every opportunity to score, but we couldn’t.

“The Ghanaians have given us a good fight but we will prepare better for our next matches,” he said.

For his part, Frank Oswald, coach of the Ghana Police Ladies, said his team lacked physical form for the match.

“It was a good game for us, playing against the host and holding them to a draw is not bad. Both teams performed well.

“One of our challenges was that we lacked physical form for the game. We haven’t fully prepared for our next season yet.

“So this competition is like a preparation for us before the season and we hope our next games will be better,” said Oswald.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that 16 clubs from Nigeria, including the Ghana Police Ladies, are participating in the tournament which began on Sunday and will end on October 24.

The third edition of the tournament is in memory of the late Flying Officer, Tolulope Arotile, who died last year.
