Mexico City, Mexico – Last week, heavy rains wey dem call torrential don turn the place upside down, as at least 64 people don die and 65 others dey missing. Na wetin government talk on Monday after tropical depression wey trigger landslides and flooding for Gulf Coast and other central states. Na so e be, the rains no dey play!
This unnamed tropical wahala come fresh for the tail end of rainy season, wey don already soak the land well well. Rivers wey bin dey full since last month just burst like someone wey no fit hold belly again. Dem go say make we look out for tropical storms and two hurricanes for Pacific coast, but this one come land like say e no send anybody.
President Claudia Sheinbaum no fit hide im surprise, as she talk to reporters say, “This intense rain no be something wey we expect say go reach this magnitude.” People dey wonder if dem no go just fit throway small warning before dis kind tsunami land for dem doorstep.
Admiral Raymundo Morales, wey be Navy secretary, don talk say dis flooding come because warm and cold air fronts just decide to join body over rivers wey don already dey full to the brim. E be like say mountains wey suppose hold this water don weak because of all dis months of heavy rain. Na wah! Dem no go fit pay rent for upstairs now o.
As e stand now, around 100,000 houses don waka for dis wahala, and Sheinbaum gree say she go meet with finance ministry to plan how dem go take rebuild the place. Dem dey check on the worst areas, wey be Hidalgo and Veracruz. For Veracruz alone, dem don report 29 deaths and 18 dey still missing, while for Hidalgo, na 21 deaths and 43 dey miss. E be like say this rain no wan gree rest for anybody.
Infrastructures like bridges don scatter, and street dey full of mud. Videos wey dey circulate show emergency responders wey dey swim through deep waters, dey find residents wey don stranded and dey carry supplies go meet dem. Na true paddy vibes wey be dis, as personnel don deploy to help recover, clean, and monitor the places wey don knack serious wahala.
Electricity wey don cut for five states don almost restore, thank God. But dem still dey worry about viruses like dengue wey dey come with the mosquitoes wey dey breed for stagnant water. Sheinbaum gree say dem go focus on how to control dem wahala too.
Indeed, di flood no be small matter, as survivors dey plea for government support while dem dey waka through mud and debris, looking for food and cover. The government don send troops and civilian rescue teams to help clear up the mess and get supplies to the people wey dey need am quick-quick. Dis kind opportunity no dey come often, but now we don see say di Gobe no dey respect person.
