Kabul, March 4, 2019 (dpa/NNN) Flash floods in Afghanistan’s Southern Helmand Province have left at least 12 people dead since Saturday, a local official said.

Six people were killed in Nawa District and six others in Lashkargah, a Spokesman for the Provincial Governor, Omar Zwak, told dpa. Eight others were injured.

Over 2,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed as flash floods caused by heavy rain swept through the province, Zwak said.

Flash floods in neighbouring Kandahar Province left 20 people dead and some 2,000 houses destroyed as of Sunday.

The victims were killed when their homes collapsed or the vehicles they were travelling in were swept away, according to the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

At least 10 people from five districts were still missing, OCHA said.

Afghanistan has seen an increased amount of snow and rain across the country in the past several days.

Such floods cause hundreds of casualties and destroy thousands of homes every year. (dpa/NNN)
