Fistula: Centre warns women to be wary of quacks

By Uchenna Ugwu

National Obstetric Fistula Center (NOFIC), Abakaliki, Ebonyi, warned pregnant women against condescending charlatans whose maternity services could lead to fistula exposure.

Professor Johnson Obuna, the centre’s medical director, gave his advice to Abakaliki on Tuesday when inspecting fistula patients in the postoperative and preoperative wards.

Obuna said the most common fistula cases received at the center were from a cesarean section performed at other hospitals with inexperienced practitioners.

He urged patients to seek appropriate medical care and standard health facilities where emergencies could be treated.

“Up to 63.5% come from a cesarean. When a pregnant woman accesses good antenatal care and adheres to expert instructions, the risk will be avoided.

“But if she doesn’t follow the instructions and the delivery is bad, she will have a fistula until proven guilty because labor is not normal until after delivery,” Obuna said.

However, he commended the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs, the state governor and his wife for their deep commitment to ensuring effective restoration of patients.

Mr. Benedict Essong, representative of UNFPA, said the organization will continue to support fistula patients and ensure that pregnant women do not die during childbirth.

Essong said the agency expected all forms of gender-based violence against women and girls to fall to zero by 2030.

In addition, Family Support and Elevation Foundation coordinator Mr. Chukwuma Elom said Ms Rachael Umahi, wife of Governor David Umahi, is committed to ensuring that female fistula patients be free from the scourge.

Elon said the foundation, which was a favorite project of Ms Umahi, would empower restored fistula patients after discharge.

A patient, Veronica Una, congratulated UNFPA, the governor and his wife for their support for the well-being of women. (NAA)
